Its the first day of black history month and that calls for celebration! Being black is a blessing everyday and every month but for the month of February, it's important to express that pride outwardly and learn about our culture and history past what they barely teach us all in school.
As I start my journey into the fashion world it's important that I know who opened the doors and paved the way for me so this month I will be sharing black history from the fashion industry.
Zelda Wynn Valdes
Zelda Wynn Valdes was a fashion and costume designer that received national attention for creating the first-ever Playboy Bunny costume. Zelda's craft focused on showing off the female body in seductive and curve-hugging styles. Not only did she create designs for notable black women of the '40s and '50s such as
Dorothy Dandridge, Josephine Baker, and Gladys Knight, she also was the first black store owner on Broadway in New York with her boutique Chez Zelda. Finishing the last 20 years of her career making ballerina costumes for the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Zelda gave black women a voice in a world were they weren't supposed to have one. She made clothes that didn't ignore our curves and she's did it all her way. So thank you Zelda for being a guide for us all.
2017 will be Ode to BCSY's first complete year as a business. Never in a million years could I have imagined myself here, creating garments and owning my own clothing brand. With this year I not only want to grow but truly find my design voice. So here are my goals for 2017!
As I grow I will add on to this list. I'm ready to soar in 2017!
I always have felt very confident about creating beautiful garments, but that's not what this competition is all about. It's about overcoming your own limitations and being better every day.
Feeling inspired and ready for 2017, I truly want this quote to be how I maneuver through sharing my voice in my designs but also just life. I want to always push past what I believe is all I can do. I want to grow and never stop believing that there is more growth to do. Never stop dreaming and having faith that what I put worth will be returned. Every day I want to be better.
